Wetlands – Case Study

Project Name: NYCDEP Wetlands Mapping
Period of Performance: 2014
Budget: ~$300K
Customer: New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP)

CS-Wetlands1GroundPoint Technologies is currently executing a pilot project to develop updated wetlands mapping for the 2500 square mile New York City Watershed. The watershed supports the single largest unfiltered water supply in the nation, supplying water daily to more than 10 million people. The wetlands mapping effort uses recent airborne LiDAR data along with both leaf on and leaf-off Color Infrared imagery in a multi-sensor data fusion effort using eCognition software from Trimble. The effort also includes a rigorous evaluation of the applicability of using LiDAR intensity data over a large area for feature extraction, and a comprehensive literature review related to the adoption of object based methods to support National Wetland Inventory mapping standards.
